How to Use This Checklist

Work through the four categories in order, Technical first, then Content, then Off-Site, then Measurement. Technical issues (blocking crawlers, CSR rendering) prevent all downstream work from having any effect. Content structure is the second priority, it directly affects citability. Off-site presence is ongoing work that compounds over months. Measurement tells you what’s working and where to focus next. For the strategy behind each step, read our simple guide to generative engine optimization, the ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews platform playbook, and our guide to getting featured in Google AI Overviews.

A note on Google: Google says no special optimization, extra files such as llms.txt, or special markup are required to appear in its AI features. Treat the technical items below as helpful for other AI systems and for users, not as prerequisites for Google AI Overviews (Google’s AI optimization guide).

Category 1: Technical Setup (Items 1-8)

  • 1. Verify robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot: Check yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Add User-agent: OAI-SearchBot / Allow: / so your pages can appear in ChatGPT search results. GPTBot is a separate crawler used for model training, so allowing or blocking it is a policy choice that does not remove you from ChatGPT search (OpenAI crawler documentation).
  • 2. Verify robots.txt allows Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User: Add User-agent: Claude-SearchBot / Allow: / and User-agent: Claude-User / Allow: / so Claude can retrieve your pages when answering questions. ClaudeBot is Anthropic’s training crawler (Anthropic crawler documentation).
  • 3. Verify robots.txt allows PerplexityBot: Add User-agent: PerplexityBot / Allow: / so Perplexity can surface your pages with links (Perplexity crawler documentation). Perplexity citations are also among the easiest to track as referral traffic.
  • 4. Check page source for CSR rendering issues: View-source every key page. All primary content must appear in raw HTML, not require JavaScript execution. Fix with SSR, SSG, or prerendering if content is JavaScript-dependent.
  • 5. Verify sitemap.xml is referenced in robots.txt: Add Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml to help AI crawlers discover your content structure.
  • 6. Add Organization schema to every page: JSON-LD Organization schema with name, URL, logo, description, and contactPoint. Helps AI systems identify your brand entity unambiguously.
  • 7. Create and publish llms.txt: Plain-text file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt with your organization description and links to key pages. 15-minute implementation. It is a proposed format and major AI providers have not confirmed using it for citations, so treat it as low-cost groundwork rather than a ranking lever.
  • 8. Verify Core Web Vitals pass: AI systems favor fast, technically clean pages. Slow pages with high CLS or LCP failures are less likely to be retrieved. Run PageSpeed Insights on all key pages, and use our technical SEO audit checklist for the full set of checks.

Category 2: Content Optimization (Items 9-18)

  • 9. Add FAQPage schema to all FAQ sections: One industry analysis found pages with FAQPage schema were about 3.2x more likely to appear in Google AI Overviews, so treat it as a directional signal. Add to every page with a question-structured FAQ section.
  • 10. Add Article schema to all blog posts: Include datePublished, dateModified, author (Person entity), and publisher. Freshness signals matter for AI retrieval.
  • 11. Add Author (Person) schema with credentials: Named author with jobTitle, knowsAbout, and sameAs (LinkedIn profile URL). E-E-A-T author signals improve passage citation credibility.
  • 12. Restructure all page headings as questions: Every H2 and H3 should be phrased as a specific question a buyer would ask (“What does Shopify migration cost?” not “Migration Pricing”). AI systems use heading text to match passages to user queries.
  • 13. Write direct answers in the first 2 sentences: Every section’s first 1 to 2 sentences must state the complete answer immediately, before any context or qualification. The inverted pyramid is the citable format.
  • 14. Optimize passage length to 134-167 words: Audit the main content sections of your top 20 pages. Passages under 100 words lack credibility depth; passages over 250 words force AI summarization. Target the 134 to 167 word range for GEO citability.
  • 15. Make every passage self-contained: Test each passage in isolation, it must make sense without surrounding context. No unresolved pronouns, no assumed prior knowledge. Name everything explicitly in each passage.
  • 16. Add dates and recency signals: Include “As of [Month Year]” or “Updated [date]” in content about current conditions. AI systems weight fresh content for time-sensitive queries.
  • 17. Cite sources within your content: Content that cites external sources (“According to [Source], X% of…”) gets cited by AI more often than unsourced assertions. AI systems prefer content that applies the same sourcing rigor they do.
  • 18. Build a topical authority cluster: Map your core topic and create a hub page with 6 to 10 supporting pages covering sub-topics. AI systems favor sites with comprehensive topical coverage over sites with a single comprehensive page.

Category 3: Off-Site Presence (Items 19-23)

  • 19. Establish Reddit presence in 3 relevant subreddits: Identify subreddits where your target buyers have conversations. Begin genuine expert participation, answering questions, sharing original data. 90-day consistent effort before expecting citation lift.
  • 20. Audit and optimize G2/Capterra profiles: Complete profile, respond to all reviews (positive and negative), request reviews from satisfied customers. Review platform content is a primary AI citation source for product recommendation queries.
  • 21. Publish original annual research: A survey, dataset, or industry study published on your site creates citation chains across publications, Reddit, and Wikipedia. Single strongest owned-media investment for AI citation.
  • 22. Secure 2-3 industry publication contributions: Bylined articles (not press releases) in recognized industry publications create earned media that AI systems retrieve. Identify publications your target buyers read and pitch original, data-backed contributed articles.
  • 23. Optimize YouTube for AI citation: Add corrected transcripts to every video. Write 500+ word descriptions with key facts. Add chapter markers with descriptive titles. Target informational and how-to queries. Long-form only, Shorts generate 51x fewer AI citations.

Category 4: Measurement (Items 24-25)

  • 24. Build a monthly AI visibility tracking system: Create a prompt set of 20 to 30 brand-direct, category-level, and scenario queries. Run monthly in incognito sessions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Log: brand mentioned Y/N, brand cited with link Y/N, position, competitors present, sentiment. Track as month-over-month deltas, the trend is the signal, not any single week’s snapshot.
  • 25. Set up AI referral traffic tracking in GA4: Create segments for perplexity.ai referral sessions, chatgpt.com UTM source sessions, and organic sessions with #text= URL fragments (Google AIO clicks). Track brand search volume in Search Console as a leading indicator. Set monthly reporting cadence. Connect AI visibility trends to pipeline metrics on a quarterly basis to build the business case for ongoing GEO investment.

AEO Checklist, FAQs

Questions about implementing the AEO checklist for AI search citation.

What is an AEO checklist?
An AEO (answer engine optimization) checklist is a prioritized list of technical, content, off-site, and measurement actions that make your pages easier for AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews to retrieve, understand, and cite. This checklist has 25 steps across four categories, and it works best when you complete them in order.
Which AEO checklist items have the highest immediate impact?
In order of immediate impact: (1) robots.txt, if you’re blocking AI crawlers, nothing else matters. Fix in 10 minutes. (2) CSR rendering check, if your content isn’t in raw HTML, AI crawlers can’t read it. Highest technical priority. (3) FAQPage schema, 3.2x Google AIO eligibility increase. Add to key pages within a day. (4) Heading restructure as questions, affects all three platforms, medium effort. (5) Passage answer-in-first-2-sentences, direct citability improvement, affects all AI platforms. These five items alone move the needle. The off-site items (Reddit, publications, YouTube) take longer but compound over months.
How long does it take to see results from AEO optimization?
Technical fixes (robots.txt, schema, rendering): results within days to weeks, AI crawlers re-index and platforms update their retrieval results relatively quickly. Content optimization (passage structure, heading format): results within 2 to 8 weeks as AI systems re-crawl and update their citation patterns. Off-site presence (Reddit, publications, YouTube): 60 to 90 days before citation lift typically becomes visible, community presence and earned media take time to build the web signal that AI systems retrieve. Total: expect 30 days for technical gains, 60 to 90 days for content gains, and 90 to 180 days for off-site gains to show in monthly tracking.
Do I need all 25 items or can I start with a subset?
Start with the 8 Technical items, they are prerequisites. If you’re blocking AI crawlers or serving JavaScript-only content, the content and off-site items have no effect. After the technical foundation is solid, the 10 Content items are the highest-ROI next step, they directly affect how likely your pages are to be cited once crawlers can read them. The 5 Off-Site items are the longest-range investment and the most impactful over time (85.5% of AI citations come from earned media). Measurement is ongoing and should start immediately alongside technical setup so you have a baseline to track improvement against.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Related but distinct. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focuses on being selected as the direct extracted answer, featured snippets, voice results, AI Overview summary boxes. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focuses on being cited inside multi-source AI-generated responses, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude. This checklist covers both: the content items (FAQPage schema, question headings, direct answers) primarily target AEO/Google AIO; the passage optimization and off-site items primarily target GEO/Perplexity/ChatGPT. A complete strategy addresses both simultaneously because the shared foundation (clean content, topical authority, direct answers) benefits all AI surfaces. For a plain-English breakdown, see our guide to generative engine optimization.
How often should I run through this checklist?
Technical audit: quarterly, robots.txt and schema can break with site updates, plugin conflicts, or CMS changes. Content audit: semi-annually, review top 20 pages for passage structure, heading format, and freshness signals every 6 months. Off-site review: monthly check-in on Reddit participation volume and G2 review count; quarterly review of publication contribution pipeline. Measurement: monthly prompt testing, this is how you know what’s working. Annual full checklist review to incorporate new AI platforms, updated citation research, and platform behavior changes.
Should I allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot in robots.txt?
Allow the search and retrieval crawlers if you want citations: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User for Claude, and PerplexityBot for Perplexity. Training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot are a separate policy decision. Read the official OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity crawler documentation before you edit robots.txt.
